- Going through the screening process, which includes looking at income, credit, need, and reference checks.
- Being approved by the Habitat Board of Directors for partnership.
- Working with the volunteers and staff of Habitat until the house is completed.
- Depositing $800 with Habitat to help with closing costs.
- Taking the required VHDA class.
- Purchasing the house, which normally includes signing a 30 year mortgage loan note.
- Making the monthly mortgage payment: which covers your note payment, homeowner's insurance, and property taxes.
- Paying your own utilities.
- Being a kind and considerate neighbor.
- Maintaining the house in good condition.
